Butterfly Knives in Movies

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of butterfly knives you can find in the movies when you take the time to look for them. It always seems like 99 percent of the knives you see in movies and TV shows are folding knives, so while I was hunting around for butterfly knives, I only expected to find one or two movies with balis in them. To my surprise, I found lots more! I wasn’t able to track down photos of every balisong in every movie, but here are some of the butterfly knives in movies I was able to find. Enjoy!

Butterfly Knives in Movies

The Goonies

If you’re like me, then you probably saw this movie years ago, before you really got into knives. It’s always fun to go back and watch a movie that you haven’t seen in a long time and spot a knife in it. The Goonies does in fact have a balisong in it (and an Italian-style knife in another scene). This should just be more evidence for you that The Goonies is awesome.

Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life

Out of all the movies in this post, this is the one I’m betting you already heard features a balisong—Angelina Jolie is the one actress that everyone seems to know has butterfly-flipping skills.

American Ninja

This is another movie that I haven’t seen, but it features a balisong, nonetheless.

The Outsiders

This is another movie you probably saw years ago; I saw this movie in middle school after reading the book. There’s a stiletto in this movie, as well.

Face/Off

I’ve actually never seen this movie, but I love the Kris-blade on this balisong. It’s not something you see super often, and it’s fun to see a unique-looking balisong on the big screen.

Big Trouble in Little China

If you search for this movie on YouTube, you can watch this whole awesome flipping scene.

American Samurai

Balisongs seem to be in a lot of movies that have to do with martial arts, which isn’t super surprising. American Samurai is another of these movies.

There are balisongs all around if you take the time to look for them. Like I said before, I found butterfly knives in lots of other movies, but I wasn’t able to track down a photo for every knife. If you have spotted any butterfly knives in movies, feel free to post them in the comments section below. If you have screen shots of the butterfly knives you’ve spotted, it would be especially awesome if you posted pictures in the comments section, as well.

What’s your favorite movie that features a balisong?

With the holidays upon us and practically gone, happy holidays from the Butterfly Knife Blog. I hope you all have a very happy and safe holiday with lots of balisongs under your tree and in your stocking.
